HBO has unveiled the lead actors for its highly anticipated Harry Potter reboot. Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will bring Hermione Granger to life, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley.
Producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod described the casting as an “extraordinary search,” saying, “These three unique young actors have remarkable talent. We are excited to see the magic they will create on screen together. Thank you to the thousands of children who auditioned—discovering fresh talent was a joy.”
Based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, the new series promises a faithful adaptation with added depth and detail. Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer. HBO said the show will closely follow the books, offering fans a richer experience.
Previously announced cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The role of Voldemort is still under wraps, though Ralph Fiennes, who played the character in the films, has expressed support for Cillian Murphy taking on the role.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys told Deadline the series will likely premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
When the series was first announced in 2023, Rowling stated, “HBO Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is incredibly important to me.” She noted the long-format series allows for more detail and depth than the films.
